Resident Firefighter Program Information

Resident Firefighter Program

Live at the station, serve your community, and gain experience few firefighters get early in their careers.

The Hyalite Fire District offers resident firefighter opportunities at all three of our fire stations. Residents live on-site and staff shifts throughout the year in exchange for room and board. Schedules are available to work around your life, whether you're a student, working full-time, or somewhere in between.

Residents are the backbone of our response. As a volunteer-based department, Hyalite Fire relies heavily on resident firefighters to get to calls quickly, and residents have historically run more calls and gained more hands-on experience than any other members of the department. If you're looking to build a career in the fire service or simply want to make a real difference in your community, there's no better place to start.

Requirements

Requirements

Resident positions are filled based on availability at our Sourdough, Cottonwood, and Rae stations. Residents must hold an EMT certification or obtain one within six months of moving in. The district offers reimbursement of up to $1,000 toward EMT course costs for eligible members.

Residents may also earn per-call stipends for responding to calls beyond their required commitment.

Sourdough Station

Resident Program at Sourdough Station

Sourdough Station is home to Hyalite's largest resident crew, with eight resident firefighters living on-site. Sourdough residents are at the center of the district's response, staffing the station so our community gets fast emergency response around the clock.

Living at Sourdough

Each resident gets a private, dormitory-style room. Residents share a full kitchen, a living area with a TV, and three bathrooms. The station also has a full gym and private parking for residents.

Shifts

Residents staff shifts in exchange for room and board. Each Sourdough resident is assigned to one of three crews: A, B, or C. Crews rotate weekend coverage, with each shift running from Friday at 1900 to Monday at 0700. That means every resident works one weekend shift every third weekend, a schedule that leaves plenty of room for school, work, and life outside the station.

What residents gain

Sourdough residents run a high volume of calls and build hands-on experience quickly. Residents can also earn per-call stipends for responding to calls beyond their required commitment.

Cottonwood Station

Resident Program at Cottonwood Station

Cottonwood Station offers four resident firefighter positions. Residents live on-site and play a key part in Hyalite's weeknight response, helping our community get fast emergency response.

Living at Cottonwood

Like Sourdough, Cottonwood gives each resident a private, dormitory-style room. Residents share a kitchen, a living area, and bathrooms. The station also has a gym and private parking for residents.

Shifts

Residents staff shifts in exchange for room and board. Cottonwood residents are split into two crews, and each shift runs from 1900 to 0700:

  • First crew: Monday and Tuesday evenings
  • Second crew: Wednesday and Thursday evenings

With two set evenings a week, the schedule is easy to plan around school, work, and life outside the station.

What residents gain

Cottonwood residents respond to calls regularly and build hands-on experience quickly. Residents can also earn per-call stipends for responding to calls beyond their required commitment.

Rae Station

Resident Program at Rae Station

The Rae Station resident program offers a different kind of resident living. Four residents live in the Rae Fire Station House, a standard residential home the district owns right next to Rae Station. Residents get the comfort of a house with the station steps away, and they play a key part in Hyalite's response to our community.

Living at Rae

The Rae Fire Station House works more like a rental than the dormitory-style living at our other stations. Four residents share a standard residential home right next door to the station.

Two ways to earn your rent

Rae residents choose the option that best fits their schedule:

  • Free rent: Work regular night shifts alongside Cottonwood Station crews, from 1900 to 0700.
  • Discounted rent: Respond to calls on your own schedule, with your rent discount based on how many calls you respond to each month.

That flexibility makes Rae a strong fit for residents with busy or unpredictable schedules who still want to be part of the action.

What residents gain

Rae residents respond to calls regularly and build hands-on experience quickly. Residents can also earn per-call stipends for responding to calls beyond their required commitment.
