Ongoing Training Overview

Graduating the academy is just the beginning. The Hyalite Fire District is committed to helping every member keep growing, whether you want to sharpen your core skills or build toward a leadership role.

Advanced Certifications

Advanced certifications (IFSAC/ProBoard)

The Hyalite Fire District offers the following standard advanced certifications to our members:

  • Firefighter 2
  • Fire Instructor 1 and 2
  • Fire Officer 1 and 2
In-House Continuing Education

In-House Continuing education

Members train year-round on standard Hyalite Fire District firefighting, incident command, EMS, and rescue tactics, so skills stay sharp and every crew operates uniformly on scene.

Driver/Operator Training

Driver/Operator training

Getting crews and equipment to the scene safely is one of the most important jobs in the fire service. Firefighters who want to take the wheel complete a dedicated task book for each type of apparatus they'll operate.

Our Driver/Operator program aligns with and exceeds Volunteer Fire Insurance Services (VFIS) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, covering safe driving on everything from city streets to narrow mountain roads, along with pump operations, water supply, and onboard equipment. Driver/Operators continue training regularly to keep these skills sharp, because every response starts with them.

At The Hyalite Fire District, we provide opportunity to pursue the following IFSAC/ProBoard Certifications through the Montana Fire Services Training School:

  • Pumper Apparatus Operator
  • Wildland Apparatus Operator
  • Mobile Water Supply Operator
Officer Development Training

Leadership development

Promotional academies for Lieutenant and Captain are offered annually to qualified members in good standing. Members receive training in leadership philosophy and personnel management, incident command, and crew leading.

Wildland Fire Training

Wildland fire training

As a district protecting the wildland-urban interface, wildland firefighting is a core part of what we do. Hyalite offers continual wildland training for volunteers, with a path to advance all the way to the NWCG Engine Boss qualification.

National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) wildland certifications offered through the Hyalite Fire District:

  • Basic Wildland Firefighter
  • Firefighter Type I (S-131)
  • Engine Boss (S-231)
EMS Training

EMS Training

As a transporting fire agency, most of the calls we answer are medical emergencies, so EMS training is central to what we do. Hyalite's EMTs and Paramedics train to national and state standards, so every patient gets high-quality care from the moment our crews arrive.

Standards and oversight

  • National standards: Our EMS training follows National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) standards.
  • State licensing: Our providers meet State of Montana EMS licensing requirements.
  • Medical direction: All EMS training is approved by the Gallatin County EMS Medical Director, so our protocols and training reflect current best practices in emergency medicine.

Regional partnership

Hyalite Fire District is a participating agency in the Gallatin County EMS Training Consortium. Through the consortium, our members train with EMS providers from across the county, which builds consistency in patient care and strengthens how we work alongside our partner agencies on scene.

Training for every member

  • Recruits earn their BLS CPR certification in the Recruit Academy.
  • EMTs and Paramedics train year-round on Hyalite's EMS tactics to keep their skills sharp and their licenses current.
  • Members working toward their EMT may be eligible for up to $1,000 in reimbursement for course costs.

Flathead Valley Paramedic Program

The Hyalite Fire District is one of four fire agencies in Gallatin County that sponsor members in the Flathead Valley Paramedic Program through a satellite campus in the Gallatin Valley.
