Minimum Requirements for Prospective Volunteers
Volunteer Requirements & Commitments
Accepting a position in the Recruit Academy means committing to a minimum of two years of volunteer service with Hyalite Fire District.
Minimum requirements
- At least 18 years old
- High school diploma or GED
- Independent and reliable transportation
- Good driving record
- No criminal history
- Live within a reasonable distance of the district's response area
Ongoing requirements
- Uphold the mission and values of the department
- Successfully complete all portions of the Recruit Academy
- Be able to meet the duties and requirements of the position
Recruit Firefighter Commitments
The Recruit Academy runs for approximately four months, and no absences are allowed.
Recruits are expected to:
- Attend weekly department training on Wednesday nights
- Attend weekly recruit training, all day Saturdays and every other Sunday
- Participate in any department or Association-sponsored events held during the academy
Apprentice Firefighter, Firefighter, Lieutenant, and Captain commitment
- Attend weekly department training on Wednesday nights
- Fulfill one weekly shift:
- Apprentice Firefighters and Firefighters: one 6-hour day shift at the Sourdough Fire Station
- Lieutenants: one day shift
- Captains: one command shift
- Respond to at least 10% of emergency calls each quarter, or an equivalent approved by the Fire Chief
- Attend two weekend extrication trainings each year, when offered
- Participate in at least one department or Association-sponsored event each year
These requirements are provided for informational purposes for prospective Recruit Academy applicants. For current volunteers, the Volunteer Handbook governs where any differences exist.
